Word 97/2000 Viewer (Word 2000) (Windows 95/98/NT)

Important   This download is for users who don't have Word; it allows them to open and view Word 2000 documents.

To share Word 97/2000 documents with those who do not have Word, download Word 97/2000 Viewer (Word 97) (Windows 95/98/NT).

With the Microsoft Word Viewer 97/2000, Microsoft Word users can share documents with those who do not have Word and users without Word can open and view Word documents. This product also allows users who wish to post rich-formatted Word documents on the Internet to expand their online audience to people who might not have Word. This viewer also allows users to view and print documents created in the Word native file format, even if they do not have Word. Users are allowed to zoom, outline, or view page layout, headers/footers, footnotes, and annotations.

Word Viewer 97/2000 includes the following features:

bulletOnline Layout View for easy reading of online documents, including those with background colors and textures
bulletDocument Map for point-and-click navigation through longer documents
bulletHyperlink navigation to open any hyperlink in a document with your installed browser

The viewer does not allow users to edit files. However, it allows them to copy information from a document to other applications.

Microsoft Word Viewer 97/2000 will follow hyperlinks located in Word documents. Word Viewer 97/2000 is built to automatically configure itself as a Helper Application for Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. This allows users to automatically view Word documents that are linked to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) pages on a LAN or on the web in the user's default web browser. Word Viewer by itself can follow document hyperlinks on a LAN. This new capability allows users to browse rich document systems on a LAN in much the same way a web browser allows you to explore the Internet.

This product is "freeware." We encourage you to copy and distribute Word Viewer to your friends and co-workers or post it on public electronic bulletin boards. The Word Viewer is also available from the Microsoft Download Service at (425) 936-6735.

To install this download:

  1. You may want to print this page to use as a reference when you are offline.
  2. Download the file from Office Update by clicking on the Download Now! at the top left of this page and following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
  3. Double-click the wd97vwr32.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
  4. Word Viewer 97 Setup will prompt you for a folder in which to install Word Viewer. The default folder location for Word Viewer is <drive>:\Program Files\WordView on a Windows 95/98 system (<drive>:\WordView on Windows NT 3.51).
  5. Click "Install" to install Word Viewer 97/2000.
  6. If Word Viewer Setup detects Word version 6.x or later on your system, Setup will prompt you to determine which application should open Word documents by default. The default application is used to open files with .doc file extensions when they are double-clicked in Windows 95.
    bulletChoosing "Open with Word" means that Word for Windows will be used by default to open Word files.
    bulletChoosing "Open with Viewer" means that Word Viewer will be used by default to open Word files.

    Note: If you select the "Open with Word" option and you want to restore Word as the default Word document handler, you will have to uninstall Word Viewer and then start Word so that it can restore its Registry information. For more information see "Installation and Maintenance" in the Word Viewer 97 Readme.doc installed with the viewer.

Instructions for use:

Go to the folder where you installed the Word Viewer, and run WordView.exe. The program will prompt you for a Word document to load.

To remove this download:

  1. From the Start menu, point to the Settings entry, and choose Control Panel. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. In the list on the Install/Uninstall tab, find the entry Microsoft Word Viewer 97, and highlight it. Click Add/Remove.
  3. When it asks you if you are sure you want to remove the application, click Yes.
  4. When it finishes removing the program, click OK on the confirmation dialog box.

Sign up for the Microsoft Office Auto Update Notification Service:

The Microsoft Office Auto Update Notification Service is an e-mail list that you can join to find out when new updates are added to the Office Update Web site. The notification e-mail messages contain the name of the update, the download location for the update, a description of the update, and a list of the Office products that will be updated. This is a great way to be notified of critical or helpful Office updates, including additional product functionality or the latest security updates.

Viewer for Word 97 on PCs using Windows 3.x

Microsoft® Word Viewer 97 for Windows 16-bit Operating Systems (Word Viewer), the newest member of the Word Viewer family, is a freeware product that allows you to view and print Microsoft Word 97 documents. Like previous versions of Word Viewer, the latest version can also open documents created with all previous versions of Word for Windows and version 4.x and above of Microsoft Word for Macintosh®. You cannot edit an open document in Word Viewer. However, you can copy text to the Clipboard to paste it in other applications. Microsoft encourages you to distribute Word Viewer along with your Word 97 documents to people who do not have Microsoft Word 97.

Installation instructions:

  1. You may want to print this page to use as a reference when you are offline.
  2. Download the file from Office Update by clicking on the Download Hyperlink at the software download zone and following the instructions in the dialog boxes.
  3. Double-click the WdVw9716.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
  4. Word Viewer Setup will prompt you for a folder in which to install Word Viewer or you can simply accept the suggested default location. The default folder location for Word Viewer is <drive>:\WORDVIEW.
  5. After choosing the folder location for Word Viewer, continue through setup and click Install to install Word Viewer.
  6. If Word Viewer Setup detects Word for Windows version 6.x on your system, it will prompt you to determine which application should open Word documents by default.

Important:

bulletChoosing "Open with Word" means that Word will be used by default to open Word files.
bulletChoosing "Open with Viewer" means that Word Viewer will be used by default to open Word files.

Note If you select the "Open with Viewer" option and you want to restore Word as the default document handler, you will have to uninstall Word Viewer and reinstall Word so that it can restore its document handling information.

Instructions for use:

To run Word Viewer, in File Manager, double-click on the wordview.exe file. You can also double-click on the Word Viewer icon in Program Manager. For additional information on using Word Viewer, see Readme.doc located in the same directory as Word Viewer. To view this file, run Word Viewer. In the "Open" dialog box, click Readme.doc, and then click OK. If the "Open" dialog box is not pointing to your WORDVIEW folder when you start Word Viewer, change to that folder and open readme.doc. If you plan to distribute Word Viewer, either online or on disks, you will need wdvw9716.exe or the files it unpacks.

Uninstallation instructions:

There is no Uninstall feature included with this download.

Excel 97/2000 Viewer: Spreadsheet Files

Note This download is for users who don't have Excel; it allows them to open and view Excel 97 and Excel 2000 spreadsheet files.

The Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer allows users to view and print Excel 97 and Excel 2000 spreadsheet files, in addition to other Excel for Windows® (versions 2.0 and greater) and Excel for the Macintosh® (versions 2.2a and greater) spreadsheet files. This small, freely distributable viewer gives users the flexibility to view page layout, copy and control cell sizes, and access the zoom and AutoFilter features. This viewer also supports OLE DocObject as well as the ability to view any Excel file.

Note  While this viewer is called the Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer (and is referred to by this name throughout this page), it is important to understand that you are not limited to only viewing Excel 97 spreadsheets.

Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer is built to automatically configure itself as a Helper Application for Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer (it can also be manually configured as a Helper Application for other browsing tools). This allows users to automatically view Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xls) that are linked to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) pages on a local area network (LAN) or the World Wide Web.

Users should copy and distribute Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer to friends and coworkers, or post it onto public electronic bulletin boards, LANs, and Internet sites. This way individuals without Microsoft Excel will have a utility that allows them to view Excel spreadsheets.

This will ensure that anyone who obtains the viewer from that Web site will have access to the latest version of the viewer, and up-to-date information about it.     Note If you already have a full version of Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, DO NOT install Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer in the same directory. Doing so will cause file conflicts. The default folder location in the installer is c:\Program Files\Xlview.

Instructions for use:

To run Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer, do one of the following:

bulletOn the Start menu, point to Programs and then click Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer.
bulletFrom the desktop, locate and double-click the Xlview.exe program file. By default this file is located in the c:\Program Files\Xlview folder.

For more information on using Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer, click Contents on the Help menu in Microsoft Excel 97 Viewer.

To remove this download:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Install/Uninstall list, select Microsoft Excel Viewer 97, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Remove All.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Finish to complete and exit the installer.
