International Toll-Free: An Ally for Business
Expansion
by Melanie Dodson
Imagine your customers around the world being able
to reach you anytime, from anywhere, at no cost to them. This scenario
is a reality for many U.S. businesses that have opened up global
toll-free lines. International Toll-Free Service is delivering
solutions for many multinational corporations by facilitating free and
easy calling for customers, business travelers, and personnel in
remote offices. Consequently, sales volume is increasing, business
travelers are communicating more frequently with home offices, and
customers are experiencing improved service.
International Toll-Free Service (ITFS) is free to
the caller and easy to use. It is suitable for both phone and fax,
making it an important element of regional call center solutions. ITFS
modem dialup capability allows business travelers to check e-mail on
laptop computers. Advanced features may include a caller paid option,
when country-specific calling restrictions are desired. Additional
features include call routing, call termination, network-management
services, and foreign language/translation assistance. With ITFS and
call forwarding and routing, a multinational company could offer
24-hour/7-day service by routing calls to open offices around the
world.
Creating a "Virtual Office"
The implications of this capability are
far-reaching. For example, ITFS can be a cost-effective way to extend
customer and technical service support to countries where the company
has little or no physical presence, thereby creating a "virtual
office." Toll-free lines have been shown to encourage customer
calls, orders and feedback and demonstrate the company's commitment to
the customer, thus providing enhanced service.
These numbers have a unique and
nationally-recognized toll-free dialing format. In other words,
callers in each country can distinguish the number as toll-free
because it conforms to the country's toll-free format, which often
varies country to country. Here, a simple, direct-dial, reverse-charge
call is made easy for the caller in each country. A company can use a
country-specific toll-free number to quickly and virtually enter a
market with little initial investment, allowing for cost-effective
market testing.
A Worldwide Toll-Free Standard
Universal International Freephone Numbering (UIFN)
is fated to become the new standard for international access. With
UIFN, U.S. businesses will be able to advertise one toll-free number
for international calls from any of the approximately 25 participating
countries. The ultimate aim is for this service to be universal,
replacing the numerous existing formats with a single, worldwide
standard. UIFNs will especially benefit companies advertising on the
Internet or in publications distributed in several countries, or on TV
channels seen around the world. For example, potential customers who
are hesitant to make purchases over the Internet may respond to an
ITFS number given on a company's web site. With the addition of UIFN,
U.S. businesses seeking new markets have one more tool within their
arsenal to help them simplify their global expansion
Toll-free calling has been a tremendous success in
the United States and is finally catching on worldwide. If
international growth in toll-free service resembles its expansion in
this country, the rewards could be unlimited for companies expanding
and competing globally. Marginal costs of ITFS are far outweighed by
increased revenue potential. With the convergence of voice and data
technologies and the advent of web call centers, combining ITFS with
Internet marketing programs can deliver a powerful message.
